HIROSHIMA
An escaped inmate who eluded police in western Japan for over three weeks was caught Monday in the city of Hiroshima, ending a massive manhunt that engulfed a serene island where he is believed to have been holed up.
Tatsuma Hirao, 27, was quoted by the police as saying that he escaped undetected from Mukaishima Island, a 22-square-kilometer forested isle with a population of around 20,000, by swimming.

hole upを取り上げます。holeには「穴」という意味がありますが、動詞だとどのように身があるのでしょうか。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、hole upで「«場所に/人の元に» (しばらくの間)身を隠す、閉じこもる«in, at / with»」とありました。また、LDOCEではto hide somewhere for a period of timeと定義されています。ちなみに、この表現には他に「冬眠する」という意味もあります。holeが使われていることから穴の中で眠る動物を想像しやすく、この意味は覚えやすいのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
