SHIZUOKA--The emperor of Japan and the king of Spain, accompanied by their wives, journeyed to central Japan on April 7 to mark a time when relations between the two countries began to flourish.

They came here to observe an ornate clock that was presented by the king of Spain in the early 1600s as a token of gratitude for Japanese efforts to rescue crew members of a Spanish ship that ran aground off the coast of Chiba Prefecture in 1609.

　今回取り上げる表現は、“mark”です。“mark”は「〈人・物が〉≪…で≫〈行事など〉を祝う≪with≫」という意味をもちます(『ウィズダム英和辞典』第３版、三省堂)。LDOCEでは“to celebrate an important event”と定義されていました。
　“mark”の意味は「〈年・日などが〉〈記念日〉を示す」という語義からきています。インターネットで出てきた例文でも、〜周年といった記念日や月日を「祝う」という文脈で使われているものがほとんどでした。今回の日本とスペインとの国交が樹立されてからの長い月日を祝うという文脈で用いられています。(Blue Sky)
