　スペイン政府は８日、カタルーニャ自治州議会が先月２７日に決議した同州の「独立宣言」は違憲だとして、無効を宣言しました。

Spain is considering constitutional changes that could allow its regions to hold referendums on independence in the future, the foreign minister says.

Alfonso Dastis has told the BBC a nation wide vote on the issue could be held.

The move is in recognition of the events in Catalonia, where the regional government was deposed after a unilateral declaration of independence.

Protests were held against the detention of the region's ex-leaders.
Meanwhile, Spain's constitutional court has ruled that the declaration of independence was "unconstitutional and void".

Minor scuffles were reported earlierwhen police moved in to remove protesters. Hundreds of people also gathered in front of Catalonia's presidential palace in Barcelona.

Some major roads and rail services were still blocked as part of demonstrations called by pro-independence groups.

　“scuffle” を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「掴み合う、取っ組み合う、乱闘する」といった意味があるといえます。次に英英辞典を見てみると “a short and sudden fight,especially one involving a small number of people” と定義されていて、突発的で小規模な衝突をする様を表しているとわかります。また今回の文脈での “scuffle” は名詞形であるため、「喧嘩、小競り合い」と訳せるでしょう。
　“scuffle” はもともと古ノルド語で「押す」という意義をもつ “skufa” から派生した語であり、「双方の肩などを押し合う」といったニュアンスを含むため “fight” よりも程度の軽い衝突であると推察できます。ちなみに古ノルド語とはスカンディナヴィア人によって用いられ8〜14世紀頃まで台頭した語で、現代のアイスランド語の基になった語だそうです。
　先月の独立宣言で沸いたカタルーニャ政府でしたが今回の憲法審査会の発表でこの独立騒動はどのような展開を迎えるのかわからなくなりました。(Hapidra)
