今回取り上げる単語は、cauldron (caldron) /kˈɔːldrən/です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)には、 “a large metal pot with a lid and handle, used for cooking over on open fire”と “a situation characterized by instability and strong emotions”の二つの定義がありました。

元々はラテン語のcaldariumで “cooking-pot”という意味を持っていたそうです。ちなみに現代でもcaldriumは「（古代ローマの）温浴室」という単語として使用されております。またcalidusでのみで“hot”の意味だそうです。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「（魔女の使う）大釜，大なべ」と載っておりました。例として “a cauldron of wrath”で「煮えたぎる憤り」、 “the Olympic cauldron”で「オリンピックの聖火」が書かれておりました。
