Aquarium eyes world’s 1st whale shark breeding

An aquarium in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, has started displaying a pair of whale sharks as part of its efforts for the world’s first captive breeding of the largest fish on Earth.

“We want many people to visit our aquarium if the attempt succeeds,” an official of Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the town of Motobu said. “We hope to conduct research that leads to the development of science and the preservation of species.”

The creatures involved are a mature male whale shark, named “Jinta,” and two immature female whale sharks.

The aquarium decided to try to breed whale sharks after being given a “rare opportunity,” with Jinta showing signs of pursuing female whale sharks in the past few years and the two female ones reaching maturity.

By relocating one of the two immature female whale sharks to a fish pen at sea, the aquarium hopes Jinta and the other female whale shark will come to like each other.

今回取り上げるのは “fish pen” です。まずpenを『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、名詞では「（しばしば合成語で）おり、囲い（家畜用の）」、動詞では「（動物）を囲いに入れる、（人）を（狭い場所に）閉じ込める（up, in）」とありました。今回は名詞の意味で用いられています。LDOCEには “a small piece of land enclosed by a fence to keep farm animals in” と定義されております。

「魚の囲い」というイメージで考えると、記事内の “a fish pen at sea” は海上にあるいけすを表していると考えられます。
