An international team including researchers from the Okinawa Prefecture-based Okinawa Churashima Foundation and Australia has for the first time successfully completed an ultrasound scan of a living whale shark’s ovary.

According to the foundation, which operates the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the prefecture, the achievement could lead to the possibility of artificially breeding the world’s largest fish.

follicle /fɑ́ləkəl/ を取り上げます。inside the ovariesとあることから、卵巣の中にある何かであることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「毛穴；小胞」とありました。ここでは卵胞のことをさしていると考えられます。

　Merriam-Websterにはいくつか定義がありましたが、ここでは “a vesicle in the mammalian ovary that contains a developing egg surrounded by a covering of cells” があてはまります。

　語源をOnline Etymology Dictionaryで調べると “from Latin folliculus “a little bag,” diminutive of follis “bellows, inflated ball, money-bag,”” とあり、小さな袋という意味の言葉からきていることがわかりました。（aqua）
