今回取り上げる表現は"black-clad"というものです。clad の意味がわからなかったので調べることにしました。
『 ジーニアス英和辞典』(第５版)を見てみると「"cloth"の過去形、身に付けている」と記されてしました。また後者の意味で Word Reference com を調べてみると"dressed,covered"と定義されていました。ここでは「身に着けている」という意味がふさわしいと思われます。
この記事では「喪服に身をつつんだ、着た群衆」と訳せると思いました。(Mt.Fuji)
