Masaki Ryu plays warlord in her final Takarazuka show

Masaki Ryu will play the powerful feudal lord Oda Nobunaga in her last production with the Takarazuka Revue Company.

The grand-scale rock musical “NOBUNAGA — Geten no Yume —” (Nobunaga: The Will to Power) will be staged at the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, from Aug. 5 to Sept. 4 after its recent run at the Takarazuka Grand Theater in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture. The production depicts how Nobunaga rushes toward his dream in Japan’s Sengoku warring states period in the 16th century.

Ryu is the current top star of the Moon troupe, one of the five troupes of the all-female revue company. She portrays Nobunaga as a powerful and noble man, with her characterization of the role evoking her own life with Takarazuka, where she has always strove to forge new paths.

The dramatic life of Oda Nobunaga (1534-82) has been the subject of numerous novels, dramas, films, games and other works of fiction. This time it is being presented by the Takarazuka Revue, known for its dreamy, extravagant stage productions.

In the musical, Nobunaga rapidly expands his influence over the country after eliminating feudal lord Imagawa Yoshimoto in the Battle of Okehazama. Clad in a war costume with piercing eyes and a mustache, Ryu looks immensely gallant when she appears onstage, accompanied by dynamic guitar sounds.
