Peace pledge renewed on 71st war-end anniversary
Japan renewed its pledge for peace Monday at a government-sponsored ceremony to mark the 71st anniversary of the country’s surrender in World War II and mourn those who died in the war.
The ceremony, held at the Nippon Budokan hall in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward, was attended by about 6,000 people, including the Emperor and Empress, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and relatives of the victims of the war.
Participants observed a minute of silence from noon for the war dead, which is thought to be about 3.1 million.
The Emperor expressed his feeling of deep remorse over the war in his address at the annual event, as he did last year.
Abe said in a speech, “The peace and prosperity that we now enjoy have been built upon the precious sacrifices of the victims of the war.”
“We will never repeat the horrors of war,” Abe said, adding, “We will humbly face history, contribute to world peace and prosperity, and do all we can to realize a world where everyone can live at ease.”
In his address, the Emperor said, “Reflecting on our past and bearing in mind the feelings of deep remorse, I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never be repeated.”

今回取り上げるのは天皇陛下がおことばにはじめて用いられた “deep remorse” です。
remorseを『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、不可算名詞で「良心のかしゃく、後悔（の念）」という意味があることがわかりました。LDOCEでは “a strong feeling of being sorry that you have done something very bad” とあり、自分のした行いに強く後悔する気持ちを表します。今回はremorseの前にdeepがきており、深く後悔し、反省する気持ちが表れていることがうかがえます。天皇陛下のおことばの「深い反省」という部分がこの“deep remorse”という部分にあたるかと思われます。
