見出しにある、throw one’s hat intoを取り上げます。直訳気味に訳すと、「帽子を〜へ投げ入れる」という意味になりますが、どういった意味になるのでしょうか。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、throw [toss] one’s hat into [in] the ringで「(選挙・競技などへの)参加を正式に表明する」とありました。このthe ringの位置に記事ではLDP chief raceがきており、自民党の党首選への立候補を表明したことを表しています。英辞郎 on the WEBによると、この表現は「リング内にいるボクサーに対して一般見物客が挑戦するとき、リング内に自分の帽子を投げ入れた」ことに由来するそうです。
ちなみに、『ウィズダム英和辞典』の今回の項目の横にthrow [toss] one’s hat in the airといあ似ている表現が載っていました。これは「大喜びする」という意味になるそうです。海外の映画やドラマで大学の卒業式に帽子を投げている風景を想像しました。合わせて覚えておきたいと思います。(Blue Sky)
