今回取り上げる表現は、nefarious です。裏ゼミのプリントで何度も出てきた単語なので、あっ！と思った次第です。
一応、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で再確認したところ、「極悪な, 無法な」と載っておりました。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 "(typically of an action or activity) wicked or criminal"とのことでした。
語源はラテン語のnefarius で、nefar は "wrong"という意味だそうです。文中ではnefarious lowsと書かれているため、例の違法薬物を使った時期、つまり、high（そのキャリアの絶頂）の反対の時期を表しています。(Gomez)
