CNNにHigh Arctic（高緯度北極）の特集がありました。
手つかずの自然が織りなす世界は美しく壮大なものですが、温室効果ガスや石油発掘などの影響でその美しい世界は失われつつあります。

取り上げる表現は“pivot on”です。

“pivot”は「枢軸、旋回軸」という意味であり、形容詞の“pivotal”「とても重要な」は英字新聞でもしばしば使用される語彙です。

では“pivot on”というPVだとどのような意味になるのかといえば、『ジーニアス英和辞典』には「…に依存する；…で決まる」と定義されていました。LDOCEには“pivot on/around something”で“to depend on or be based on one important thing, event, or idea”との定義があり、例文として“His argument will pivot on the growing cost of legal fees.”とありました。地球の気候変動に関する話し合いは、専ら北極の問題を軸に行われていると解釈できると思います。(bookmark)
