本日は、記事より"see the whites of their eyes" を取り上げたいと思います。手持ちの辞書には載っておりませんでしたが、調べてみるとこの表現の下敷きとなっているのは"Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes"という諺であることがわかりました。
この表現は1775年、アメリカ独立戦争の中でイギリス軍と大陸軍が戦果をかわした「バンカーヒルの戦い」で大陸軍のウィリアム・プレスコットが命令として述べたとされている言葉です(Encyclopedia.com) 。そこから、現在では諺のように使われるようになり、"Don't react to a situation too early"(Dictionary.com)との意味を持つようになりました。
Cambridge Dictionary On-line にはこの諺の意味は書かれていませんでしたが、"Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes"の形で、"until~"以降が"until the people are very close to you"と説明がなされていました。そこから推測すると、記事の表現が用いられている箇所 "close enough to see the whites of their eyes"は、「とても距離が近い」ことを表しているのかと思います。(Dew)
