日本でも有名なコメディドラマ『フレンズ』の出演者たちが12年ぶりに帰ってきました。2月21日にアメリカで放送される特別番組の収録が日曜日に行われ、久々に集合した主演6人の写真が話題となっています。

The beloved cast (sans Matthew Perry) of the hit NBC show came together on Sunday at taping of the network's special tribute to TV director James Burrows.
Luckily, fan girl Kaley Cuoco (better known as Penny from CBS hit "The Big Bang Theory") was on hand to capture the moment and share it with us mere mortals.

取り上げるのは“mere mortals”です。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』によれば、“mortal”は複数形にすると名詞で「（神に対して、命に限りのある）人間」や、「《英略式》[形容詞を伴って]人、やつ」という意味があるそうです。さらに、“lesser [ordinary, mere] mortals”で「ふつうの人々、凡人、一般庶民」という意味が記載されていました。神と比べると人は皆死すべき運命にあることから「普通の人」という意味になるようです。

LDOCEには“lesser/ordinary/mere mortals”で“ordinary people, as compared with people who are more important, more powerful, or more skilled - used humorously”と定義されていました。“used humorously”という記述は他の英英辞典では見当たりませんでしたが、面白味を出すための表現であることが分かりました。

今回の記事では、「写真に写っている豪華俳優陣と比べて庶民である私たち」というニュアンスで使われていると思います。(bookmark)
