職場での強いストレスや、高い自殺率に対応するため、企業による独特な取り組みが行われています。韓国の企業では、従業員が棺に入る模擬葬式を行い、生きることに感謝する気持ちを持たせようとする取り組みが行われているようです。

South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, and workers often report feeling stressed. So in order to make people appreciate life, some companies are making employees take part in their own pretend funerals.

Certainly, some laughter is needed in the South Korean workplace. The country has the highest rate of suicide in the industrialised world. There is a constant complaint of "presenteeism" - having to get to the office before the boss and stay until he - invariably he - has gone.

本日は記事から、"presenteeism"を取り上げます。辞書で調べてみると「(雇用者への印象をよくするため)勤務時間以上に職場にいること〔サービス残業のたぐい〕」とあります。(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』) Cambridge Dictionariesには、"the act of staying at work longer than usual to show that you work hard and are important to your employer"とありました。以上のような意味もありますが、他の辞書を調べてみますと、違う意味でも使われるようです。例えば、LDOCEには"the practice of coming to work despite illness, injury, anxiety, etc., often resulting in reduced productivity." とあったり、Wikitionaryには、"The act of being present at work even if one is too sick to be productive, or work beyond the expected hours"とあるように「体調(気分)が優れない状態で、職場に行く」のような意味もあることことがわかりました。

今はもう行なってはいませんが、私はアルバイト先で、自分が早く仕事を終えても、先輩より先に帰らないということを行なっていた時期がありました。今回は韓国の例でしたが、日本でも"presenteeism"のような事象が多いのかもしれません。(Dew)
