2020年の東京オリンピックのエンブレムの応募の受付が24日正午から始まりました。夕方までの登録ですでに377件を上回り、世間の関心の高さが伺えます。

Online submissions begin for new Olympic logos
The organizing committee for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics has begun accepting submissions for the events' new emblems.

The online applications began on Tuesday at noon.
At a ceremony to open the competition, committee head Ryohei Miyata shouted "We are hoping for excellent designs," while committee members rang a gong Miyata had crafted.

There were more than 300 submissions in the first 30 minutes.

In addition, downloads of application guidelines have topped 70,000 since mid-October.

Submissions will be accepted until December 7th.

They will then be put through a 4-stage pre-screening by the logo selection panel and outside experts to determine whether they comply with application requirements and are eligible for trademark registration.

The organizing committee hopes to narrow down the entries to between 100 and 200 by the end of the year, and decide on the new logos in the spring.

The initial emblems were scrapped in September amid allegations of plagiarism.

It remains to be seen whether the committee can ensure transparency in choosing new emblems that are able to win wide public support.
