Candidates for 2020 Games logo narrowed down to four
The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee has winnowed down the logo candidates for the 2020 Games to four finalists.
The four designs were selected Saturday after a three-day screening round involving 21 members of the committee’s emblem selection panel, chaired by Ryohei Miyata, president of Tokyo University of the Arts.
The finalists will be made public on the committee’s website for comments after undergoing trademark checks. According to the committee, procedures involving trademark registration for the four candidate emblems will cost about \80 million in total.
The new logo will be decided this spring after a final screening by the selection panel.
今回取り上げるのは、“winnow down”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“to make a list, group, or quantity smaller by getting rid of the things that you do not need or want”という定義が見つかりました。
さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4』（大修館書店）で確認してみると、「〈穀物〉を（もみがら・ごみなどから）あおぎ分ける」という意味から「（候補などを）選りすぐる、しぼる」を表すと分かりました。タイトルにはほぼ同義のnarrow downが用いられていました。
今回選ばれた4作品はインターネット上で公開され、国民の意見を反映した後に最終決定されるそうです。(ninetails)
