The death of Cedric Diggory is one of the most interesting moments of J.K. Rowling’s very, very interesting career. 今回取り上げるのは"kill the spare釤です。この台詞はシリーズの中の第4章ハリーポッターと炎のゴブレットでボルデモートという闇の帝王が復活するときの場面で出てくるもので、ハリーポッターと一対一の勝負をしたいために、ボルデモートがその場に一緒にいたセドリックを排除したいと考え、召使遣いに命令した場面です。spareを調べると、『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』によれば、 「予備品」「余計なやつ」とありました。スペアタイヤなどとカタカナでも使用する馴染みのある単語ではありますが、他にも別の意味があることがわかりました。ということで意味は「余計なやつを殺せ」というボルデモートの命令であることがわかりました。(lua)
