大相撲名古屋場所の千秋楽が昨日行われ、横綱である白鵬が優勝を決めました。また最多優勝記録を35度にしたようです。

気になったのは“thwart”です。“thwart”は「〈計画・目的など〉を挫折させる,くじく;〈人〉［の・・］を妨げる」とありました。「『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版』大修館書店」また、LDOCEには“to prevent someone from doing what they are trying to do:”と記されています。さらに語源を調べると“"oppose, hinder," mid-13c., from thwart (adv.). Related: Thwarted; thwarting.”と分かりました。「ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY」
