Three people were killed and five were injured as a small private aircraft crashed into a residential area in western Tokyo on Sunday morning, setting homes on fire, police said.
The single-engine propeller aircraft with five people aboard crashed around 11 a.m. in Chofu shortly after takeoff from a nearby airfield and set fire to five houses and two cars, according to the Tokyo Fire Department.
Two men pulled out of the wreckage and a woman rescued from a house hit by the plane died, while three other men aboard the plane and two other women on the ground were injured and taken to hospital, the police said.
Photos taken by Kyodo News showed a gutted house, the tail section of a light aircraft turned almost upside down, and firefighters battling fires and trying to rescue people.
