Kakuryu clinches Kyushu crown
With five wrestlers still in with a shout of victory, day 14 of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament had the potential to be blown wide open. But, as others faltered, it was Kakuryu who kept his eyes on the prize to stay in front and secure his second Emperor’s Cup as a yokozuna and third overall.
A couple of false starts ratcheted up the tension in Kakuryu’s bout with ozeki Goeido (9-5) on Saturday at Fukuoka Kokusai Center. After Goeido’s bullish charge at the jump-off, the yokozuna regained the composure that has been a hallmark of his bouts this tourney to spin and pull the ozeki over the bales for his 13th, and decisive, win.
