Mount Aso rumbles to life, sending ash over Kyushu
A massive volcano is belching smoke and ash over Kyushu just two months after one in Nagano killed more than 60 hikers by erupting without warning.
Mount Aso, whose caldera dominates Kyushu, rumbled to life Tuesday before sending a stream of ash 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) into the air Wednesday.
Meteorologists warned that rocks and ash could fall within a 1-km radius of the volcano.
The eruption is Aso’s first in 19 years and comes after Mount Ontake in Nagano killed dozens of hikers during an unexpected eruption in September.
Last month, experts warned that a disaster on Kyushu, which has been struck by seven massive eruptions over the past 120,000 years, could see an area that is home to 7 million people buried by molten rock in just two hours.
