Mt. Aso erupts violently

Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture erupted on Saturday, blasting a column of smoke more than 10 kilometers into the air, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Following the explosive eruption, the agency banned approach to the mountain by raising its volcanic alert to Level 3.

According to the Kumamoto prefectural police, a window was hit by an ash deposit and cracked at the National Aso Youth Friendship Center in the city of Aso. There were no reports of eruption-linked injuries.

Electricity supplies were temporarily cut off for about 1,600 houses and buildings in Aso, including the city hall, Kyushu Electric Power Co. and other sources said.

According to the agency, the blast occurred at the No. 1 crater of the 1,506-meter Nakadake peak at around 1:46 a.m., the first volatile eruption at the crater in 36 years. A satellite observation confirmed that plumes of smoke rose as high as 11,000 meters.

今回取り上げる表現は “an ash deposit” です。depositには頭金や預金、積立金などの意味がありますが、今回はこれらとは異なった意味で用いられています。

『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べますと、可算または不可算名詞で「堆積物、沈殿物、埋蔵物、鉱床」という意味が見つかりました。LDOCEでは “a layer of a mineral, metal etc that is left in soil or rocks through a natural process” と定義されており、自然にできた層というところがポイントかと思われました。記事内の“an ash deposit” は火山灰の堆積を表していると考えられます。
