Expats in Kiev are angry, jittery, but staying put
Britons in Ukraine's capital say the Russian invasion of Crimea has left them shocked and worried – but there has been no 'expat exodus' as yet
British expats in Kiev marched in support of democracy yesterday amid widespread anger at Russia's military action in Crimea.
Glyn Thomas, 53, who is originally from London said: "The mood in Kiev among the expats is that it’s outrageous what the Russians have done."
He said most foreigners in the capital are "fully behind" Ukraine's new government, having supported the protests that resulted, last month, in Viktor Yanukovych, the former president, fleeing.
However, he said, there is a sense of concern that they could wake one morning to find Russian troops on the streets.
"People are jittery. If the Russians did push they could be in Kiev in 12 hours and we could wake up and it could all be over," said Mr Thomas, a father-of-one who is married to a Ukrainian and works for a real estate company.
英国に住んでいたときによく耳にしたのがこのstay putです。すでに取り上げられているように「もとの所にとどまる, そのままでいる」という意味ですが、ここでは「とりあえず情勢を見る」という意味で用いられています。ちなみにお母さんが子どもに「ここにいてね」というときには同じくこのstay putを用います。日本人が「ここにいて、（わたしが）探してくるから」という意味でDOn't move.と言うことを目撃したことがありますが、これではまるで警察です。（Shou-VR*）
