注目した単語は，”spook”です。この単語は以前も取り上げられております。是非ご参照ください。『Wisdom英和辞典（第三版）』（三省堂）で調べると「おばけ、幽霊」という意味の他に「を怖がらせる，びっくりさせる」という意味があります。この記事では動詞の意味で使われています。名詞の意味を覚えたら動詞用法も連想しやすいと思いました。ちなみにおばけのQ太郎という漫画は「Q the Spook」と訳されていました。

U.S. employers add 113,000 jobs in January

Investors seemed pleased by the figures. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 25 points, or 0.2 percent, in midmorning trading.

Soon after the report was released at 8:30 a.m. (1530 GMT), investors pulled back from stocks and shifted into safer U.S. bonds, sending bonds yields sharply lower. But then stock futures rose back above the levels where they had traded before the news. And the yield on the 10-year Treasury crept back toward its earlier level.

Cold weather likely held back hiring in December, economists said, though the impact faded in January. Construction firms, which sometimes stop work in bad weather, added 48,000 jobs last month.

Signs of economic weakness in the United States and overseas have sent stock prices sinking. Upheaval in developing countries has further spooked investors.
