(UG)

Snow blankets many parts of Japan, disrupting traffic

Wide areas of Japan were hit by snow Saturday, with transportation systems being disrupted and the Japan Meteorological Agency issuing the first heavy snowfall warning for central Tokyo in 13 years.

With a rapidly developing low-pressure front heading northeast along the south side of the Honshu main island, the agency said it expects snowfall in the central Tokyo to reach more than 20 centimeters through Sunday morning.

Snow accumulation reached 12 cm in central Tokyo, the heaviest snow for the Japanese capital since January 1998, the agency said.
Several universities in Tokyo delayed the starting times of their entrance examinations for the new academic year that begins in April.

Snow cover was observed in various regions nationwide including Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nagoya and Yokohama.

Through Sunday morning, as much as 50 cm of snow is expected in the Kanto-Koshin area and 40 cm in extended areas from western to eastern Japan, according to the agency.
