先程と同じ記事から、英語表現を取り上げたいと思います。

At the izakaya, the members drank, chatted and even showed off their impersonation skills. The conversation ranged from light topics to woeful tales of blunders made at other drinking parties with superiors or colleagues from work. The freedom to let their hair down made for a pleasant evening.

let their hair downという表現が気になりました。手持ちの辞書で調べてみましたが、見つけることができませんでした。そこでインターネットで調べてみますと、let one’s hair downで「くつろぐ」という意味があることが分かりました。また、語源も載っていたのですが、「昔、女性は人前では髪を結っておくべきだったが、一人でくつろぐときには髪をおろすことができた」ことから、この表現が使われるようになったそうです（英辞朗 on the WEB）。また、The Free Dictionaryに、”to relax and enjoy yourself without worrying what other people will think”とあり、気がねなく、のんびりと振る舞うことを指すことが分かりました。(Nat)
