the greater~という言い方は英語圏の大都市の周辺に住み始めると比較的早く、目・耳にする地理上の用法です。The greater London/New York...etcのように大都市とその周辺の地域を含めた地域を指す表現です。
辞書には「大ロンドン/ニューヨーク」などの訳が示されていますが、日本語にはフィットしなかったようで（明治時代の書物には、「大ロンドン」とか「大ニューヨーク」という言い方が見受けられます）定着はしなかったのでしょう。「大東京」というと、別のニュアンスがついてくると思います（cf. 長渕剛 「とんぼ」歌詞）。相当するのは「東京/大阪（とその）周辺」「首都圏、関西圏」あたりでしょうか。（UG）
Suica, 9 other local rail, bus cards usable across cities
A total of 10 regional electronic fare cards operated by Japan's eleven major transport authorities on Saturday became mutually usable in all their operating areas in Japan, enabling holders to travel through Japan's key cities across the country with one card.
The operators said their combined 81.98 million issued cards cover 52 railway and 96 bus services nationwide and will be valid at 4,275 of the country's around 9,000 train stations.
Besides Suica and Pasmo for the greater Tokyo area and Icoca in the Kansai region, the mutual coverage will be available for Hokkaido's Kitaca card, the Nagoya and surrounding region's manaca and Toica, the Kansai region's Pitapa, Fukuoka's Hayakaken and Kyushu's nimoca and Sugoca.
