Raft of fun on beautiful Hiroshima island

HIROSHIMA — Amid the relaxing sound of waves on a white sand beach, a blue ocean like those in the tropics and a beautiful island landscape spread out before me.

This is Kamikamagarijima island, located off the coast of Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture. Popular for enjoying outdoor activities, it is also known as a shooting location for the action film “Umizaru” (Sea monkeys) and the comedy film “Mohican Kokyo ni Kaeru” (Mohican Comes Home).

Kamikamagarijima is the second island encountered after crossing from the mainland by the Akinada Ohashi bridge. The road runs along the coast and I couldn’t help rolling the car window right down. My first destination was a swimming beach called Kenmin no Hama (Hiroshima Prefectural Beach). It is about 400 meters long and has been listed as one of Japan’s 100 best beaches.

Near the beach there are accommodations, a restaurant offering meals with plenty of seafood, a natural radon hot spring facility, tennis courts, a gymnasium and a campsite. All these features attract many people in summer, such as students on school trips and families from the Kansai region and the city of Hiroshima.

本日気になった表現は “I couldn’t help rolling the car window right down.”

Merriam-Webster.comには “to move (something) down especially by turning a handle” と定義されていました。つまり, 今回は「興奮のあまり, すぐさま窓を開けずにはいられなかった」と捉えられるのではないかと考えました。(Cayu)
