Sharp in alliance talks with Samsung Electronics
OSAKA, March 6, Kyodo

Struggling Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. is in talks with Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea on concluding a capital and business alliance, industry sources said Tuesday.

The two sides are in the final stage of negotiations, with Sharp likely to receive around 10 billion yen in investment from Samsung and the Japanese company possibly supplying the South Korean company with liquid crystal panels over the long term, the sources said.

Sharp has apparently determined that forming an alliance with its rival is inevitable in the fields of flat-screen TVs and mobile phone handsets to improve its performance and financial standing, they said.
