juxtapositionは「《正式》並列、並記」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館）という意味です。juxtapose（「[対照比較のため]〈人・物・作品など〉を一緒に並べる」(ibid)）の名詞形です。ここでも対照比較がなされていると思います。
比べているものは、”this great beauty and this wonderful country” と “this horrible tragedy”でしょう。要するに「王家の谷の美しさとエジプトの素晴らしいさ」と「今回の恐ろしい事故」を対比していると言えるでしょう。
そこで、私は「景色の美しさや素晴らしい国という天国と今回の痛ましい事件という地獄が隣り合わせになったことがとても衝撃的だった」と訳してみました。(Minnesota)
