aesthetic 復習

今回は山梨県の忍野八海に関する記事で見つけた表現を取り上げます。

今回気になった表現は、 “aesthetic” / esθéṭɪk / です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』で調べてみたところ、「美学の、審美的な、芸術美あふれる」と載っていました。また、『オックスフォード現代英英辞典』でこの表現の定義を調べてみたところ、“concerned with beauty and art and the understanding of beautiful things” と定義されていました。
この定義からも分かるように、aesthetic は単なる美ではなく、芸術的な美しさに言及する際に使われる表現のようです。

普段英語を使っていて美しさを表現するときに、真っ先に思い浮かぶのはbeautiful ですが、少なくとも芸術に関する美しさはaestheticを使うということを今回学ぶことが出来ました。このようにして英語のバリエーションをどんどん増やしていきたいと思います。（Morihiro）
