The Economistの最新号から英語表現を拾います。記事は、北朝鮮における資本主義の流れについて詳しく書かれています。今回扱う表現はさすがThe Economistだなと思います（記事はタイトルをクリック）。

The nuclear threat and the vicious eccentricities of its leadership are, for the West, the most compelling of the country’s features. But, as our briefing on explains, a revolutionary force is rising from below: a new class of traders and merchants. Capitalism is seeping through the bamboo curtain. This is not at the behest of the regime, as happened in Deng Xiaoping’s China. North Korea is more repressive and backward than Cuba or the old Soviet Union. The regime will not depart quickly or easily: in the short term, Mr Kim’s growing unease could well make him still more of a threat to his neighbours. But a familiar picture is emerging—and the world should do what it can to encourage it.

赤字で示したbamboo curtainとは何でしょうか。これは『リーダーズ英和辞典』によると「竹のカーテン《特に1950年から1960年の中国と他国との間の政治・軍事・思想的障害》」と説明されています。つまり、東アジアにおける共産主義国と非共産主義国の間における障害を意味します。

この文脈ですと、「資本主義は竹のカーテンの隙間からだんだん漏れているのだ」という訳が思いつきます。冒頭で「上手いなあ」と書きましたが、何が上手いのかと言えば、竹のカーテンは、文字通り竹を編んで作ったカーテンですので隙間がたくさんあります。そこに着目してseepという語を選択したことが上手いなあ、と感じてしまった要因です。少なくとも私は思いつかないので、記事にしました。

さて、余談ですがbamboo curtainに似た言葉にiron curtainがございます。こちらは、チャーチルかウィリアム・ジョイスによる造語で「旧ソ連圏と西洋諸国とを厳重に隔てた検閲・秘密主義の障害」もしくは一般的に「きびしい検閲・秘密主義による情報伝達への障害、または文化交流への障害」を意味します(『リーダーズ英和辞典』)。(Othello)

追記：

UG先生からコメントを頂き、bamboo curtainおよびiron curtainの初出がいつなのか気になったので調べてみたところ、意外にも古いことがわかりました。

まずbamboo curtainは、1949年のTime誌３月14日号であることがわかりました(OED)。

The Communist bosses of Peiping dropped a bamboo curtain, cutting off Peiping from the world.

次いでiron curtainの場合はさらに古く「劇場のステージと観客席を分ける鉄のカーテン」はなんと1794年に初登場し、記事で確認したiron curtainは、初登場が1920年で、より政治色を強めた意味で使われ始めたのは1924年であることがわかりました。
