marginalize

日本の国力の減退を反映しているとは思いたくはないのですが...。

Language teachers fret about UK education proposals to limit Japanese

Teachers of the Japanese language are worried about proposed changes in the curriculum of elementary schools in England. They believe that the plans may marginalize the Japanese language and cause schools to stop offering classes for it.

Under the proposed plan, students between 7 and 11 years old will be required to study at least one of six foreign languages. The list is limited to French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, and a classical language, which can either be Latin or Greek. Japanese can still be taught by schools but only as an optional offering. Japanese teachers are working together with the Japan Foundation and have written a letter to the Department of Education to voice their concerns. The Japan Foundation is an independent administrative agency that promotes cultural exchanges between Japan and other countries. The teachers are worried that by excluding Japanese from the mandatory list, the government is giving a perception that the language is no longer important, despite having been proven to be popular and useful.
