ここで気になったのはa fleet of boatsという表現です。
fleetは名詞で「艦隊、船団」、形容詞で「速い、すばやい」などの意味があり(『ジーニアス英和大辞典』)、これは以前UG先生が触れられています(fleet - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から)。ここでも「ボートの一団、船団」→「ボート総出で島に取り残された人々の救出にあたった」となります。(Nat)
