Fortune favors the brave
Students of Hirota Middle School in Rikuzen-Takata, Iwate Prefecture, read fortunes they drew at Yushima Tenjin shrine in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo on Thursday, after praying for success in their high school exams and reconstruction from Great East Japan Earthquake. The girls were among 36 third-year students at their school on an excursion, which had been postponed due to theMarch 11 tsunami. Although their school building was rendered unusable by the tsunami, they were able to make the trip due to the donations from all over the country.
今回は太文字になっている見出しを取り上げます。実はこの言葉はことわざの一つで，「運命の女神は勇者に味方する」というものです（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。fortuneは「運，運命」という意味なので，このことわざは無生物主語を扱っているものとい考えそうですが，最初のFが大文字になると「運命の女神」という意味になります（同上）。そして「the ＋形容詞」で「〜な人々」という文法ルールから，the braveは「勇敢な人々」＝「勇者」という意味になります。
