the cat's among the pixies

今回は『ハリーポッターと不死鳥の騎士団』から英語表現を拾います。ハリーは夏休みの間，ダーズリー一家と過ごさなければいけません。そんな夏のある日，魔法界でもないのに2体のディメンターに襲われます。その場は何とか切り抜け，隣人のMrs Figgに助けてもらいます。
“I’ll take you to the door,” said Mrs Figg, as they turned into Privet Drive. “Just in case there are more of them around … oh my word, what a catastrophe … and you had to fought them off yourself… and Dumbledore said we were to keep you from doing at all costs … well, it’s no good crying over the split potion, I suppose… but the cat’s among the pixies now.”
ここで取り上げる表現はthe cat’s among the pixiesなのですが，この表現はある表現のもじりなのです。一体何の表現に関係しているのでしょうか。catで辞書を引いてみると，put the cat’s among the pigeonsという表現を発見しました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。これはイギリス略式の表現で「〈人が〉（発言・行動によって，秘密がばれて）面倒を引き起こす」という意味です。ここではハリーポッターを意識して，pigeonsがpixies「妖精」になっていますね。
これは余談ですが，太文字箇所の前の文it’s no good crying over the split potionもit is no use crying over the split milk「覆水盆に返らず」のもじりです。（persimmon柿生）
