Twitterverse

本日のAsahi.com(01/21/11付け)にあったFor Japanese advertisers, the buzz is pricelessという記事から英語の表現を探って行きます。ドミノピザは日本での営業販売25周年を記念して，「時給250万円」のアルバイトを募集しました。
To celebrate its 25th anniversary in Japan, Domino's Pizza Japan Inc. announced in October that it would offer 2.5 million yen to anyone willing to take up an "extremely short-term, part-time job lasting only one hour" in December.
The actual job was cleverly kept secret, and the company said only those who were selected following a screening process would be notified about what the job entailed.
The high-paying mystery job offer quickly went viral, spreading over the blogosphere and the Twitterverse after it was reported on TV and Internet news sites.

今回取り上げるのはTwitterverseという英単語です。早速辞書を何冊かあたりましたが，見出しでこの単語を見つけることはできませんでした。仕方が無く今度は主にスラングなどを扱っているオンライン辞書(Urban Dictionary)で検索をかけてみることにしました。すると以下の記述がありましたので引用します。
“The cyberspace area of twitter. This naturally extends beyond twitter.com to anywhere you can twitter, which includes cell phones.”

しっくりくる訳語を見つけるのは困難ですが，「(インターネット上の)ツイッターの世界」を指していることがわかります。ツイッターやブログなどを通じて異常なほど高収入のアルバイト情報が広まったことがわかります。まだ定着してないので辞書に今後記載されるかどうかは定かではありませんが，twitterverseのような新語を見かけるたび言葉の息吹を感じることができるのではないでしょうか。
ちなみにTwitterverseの前にあるblogosphereはすでに紙辞書のエントリーに加えられていて「ブロゴスフィア，ブログ圏（ブロガーがつくるコミュニティー）」という意味がありました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。（ゼミ生 camel）
