Nissan Motor Co. recently announced it will start delivery of its Leaf five-seater electric vehicle in Japan and the United States this month. Sales in Europe are scheduled for early next year. Powered by lithium ion batteries, the Leaf can travel about 200 kilometers per charge. The zero-emission vehicle is priced at about 3.76 million yen, but buyers will pay less than 3 million yen once government subsidies are factored in.
「要素」という名詞の意味でよく知られているこのfactor，文中では明らかに動詞として使われています。一体どういった意味でしょうか。動詞でのfactorを辞書で調べると，

とあります。今回の社説は，日本のエコカー製造のメーカー同士の白熱した競争について取り上げられているので，辞書の意味を踏まえて上記のfactor inを見直すと，約376万円するエコカーは，政府からの補助金「を考慮する」と300万円以下で購入可能，と解釈できます。 購入希望者にとってはうれしい限りですね。
名詞では知っているが動詞としては知らない単語など，あまり使われない表現というのは英語では多々見受けられます。今回のfactorのように，普段見慣れない使い方にも目を向けて，英語の理解力を高めていきたいと思います。（ゼミ生 Shohei）
