本日JT(09/16/10付け)は創刊してから114年目にして40000回目の発刊を達成しました。それを記念して今日の新聞には22ページにわたる特別号がはさまれていました。そのことを伝えるJTの表紙にはこのように書いてありました。

今回着目した語はpatronageです。文脈上感謝を述べているのはわかりますが，具体的にどのような意味があるのでしょうか。辞書でしらべてみると「1保護，援助，奨励　2（レストランやバーへの）愛顧，ひいき（▶一般の店の場合にはbusiness《英》customを用いることが多い）」とありました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。どちらの定義も良いですが，後者の方がより文脈に適している気がします。よって，試（私）訳ですが「常日頃のご愛顧ありがとうございます」というように訳せると思います。
以前gacha君が「常連客」について書いてくれていました（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20100831/1283229206）。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版，大修館書店）でpatronageを調べると「［a〜；集合的に］常連」と載っていました。gacha君の記事にはありませんでしたが，「常連」はpatronageでも言い換え可能のようです。
さらにpatronageの先頭部分であるpatr-にはある意味が隠されているようです。Norman Lewis著のWord Power Made Easy（POCKET BOOKS）に以下のような説明がありました。
“In your reading you will come across other words containing the letters pater or part - you will be able to figure them out once you realize that the base is the word father. You might, if you feel ambitions, puzzle out the relationship to the ‘father idea’ in following words, checking with a dictionary to see how good your linguistic intuition is: 1. patrician 2. patron 3. patronize 4. patronizing 5. paterfamilias 6 padre” (p. 294)
引用の中にあるリスト以外にpatriotという単語もあります。「愛国者」という意味もありますが，アメリカが開発したミサイルを指す事もあります。辞書には「［P〜］《軍》パトリオット《米軍の対空地ミサイル（システム）；1976年初試射；全長5．18m》」とありました（『リーダース英和辞典』第2版，研究社）。愛国心，ミサイル（patriot）からひいき(patronage)まで幅広い単語の中に「父」が隠されていました。日常生活だけでなく単語の世界でも「父」の担う役割は大きいようです。（ゼミ生 camel）
