showstopperを取り上げます。そのまま直訳すると「ショーをストップする」つまり、上記の文脈と合わせて予測すると「感動を与える，感激を受ける」といった意味になりそうです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「演技を中断させるほど長い，喝采を受ける演技［歌，役者］」とありました。Cambridge Dictionaryでは“a piece in a stage performance that the audience enjoy so much that their clapping and shouts of approval interrupt the performance”と定義されています。
以上から今回イタリアのホテルの素晴らしさがshowstopper を用いて表現されていることがわかりました。(Kiwi girl)
淡水、汽水、海水
昨日、研究室で先生に淡水や汽水、そして海水などを英語でどう表現するのかと問われました。汽水に関しては見当もつかず、答えることができませんでした。良い機会だったので、今回一通り、水に関する表現を調べてみました。
まずは淡水です。これは簡単ですが、fresh waterです。一語でfreshwaterとすると、形容詞になり、freshwater fishで「淡水魚」などと表現することができます。
次に、汽水です。『ジーニアス和英辞典』を引いたところ、brackish waterとありました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』によると、brackishは「(若干)塩気のある[混じった]、塩辛い(salty)〈水など〉；不快な；塩水の[を含んだ]；汽水の」という意味になるそうです。LDOCEを確認したところ、“brackish (1500-1600) Dutch brac “salty””とあり、ドイツ語に語源を持つ表現であることがわかりました。
最後に、海水です。これは単にsea waterでいいのではないかと思いましたが、他にも表現が沢山ありました。英辞郎 on the WEBではbrine〈文〉、ocean water、salty waterなど他にもいくつか例が挙げられていました。気になる方は英辞郎 on the WEBを確認してみてください。
淡水と海水は比較的表現しやすいですが、汽水は知らなければ表現できないのではないでしょうか。この機会にしっかりと覚えておきたいと思います。(Blue Sky)

今回気になったのは、ravine /rəvíːn/ です。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず、LDOCEで引いてみると、“a deep marrow valley with steep sides” とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「渓谷、山峡、谷間」と載っていました。
続いて、ODEで語源を調べてみると、“late 18th cent. : from French, 'violent rush (of water)’.” と定義されていました。過去のブログにも取り上げられています。（Otoyo）
brackish water
ゼミで学んだ表現を取り上げます。研究室で話をしていると、新聞を読んでいた先生が「汽水」と「淡水」の英訳はなにか、と私達に投げかけました。「淡水」は fresh water とすぐに答えが出たのですが、「汽水」は恥ずかしながら出てきませんでした。
そこで『ウィズダム和英辞典』(第2版、三省堂書店)をみてみたところ、brackish water という英語が載っていました。brackish の発音は /ˈbrakɪʃ/ で、Cambridge Dictionary で定義を確認すると “Brackish water is salty, dirty, and unpleasant” とあります。
自分たちでも様々な表現を拾えるように、アンテナを張っていようと思います。今回もとても勉強になりました。(OkaUchi)
fresh 復習
ある映画の予告を見ていたら「堂々の92%FRESH」と小見出しがありました。
ここで使われているfresh /fréʃ/ は一体どのような意味なのでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には第8義に「すばらしい, すてきな」とありました。Cambridge DictionaryはUS SLANGで “good and attractive or stylish” と定義しています。例を挙げると “You’re looking fresh!” とありました。また That is fresh!” 「かっこいいね！」「すばらしいね！」という表現もあり、プラスの意味を表すことがわかりました。
しかし、他の意味も含まれています。それがRotten Tomatoesという映画評論家のレビューを集めたウェブサイトです。これは映画の評価をトマトの鮮度に置き換え、評価するサイトです。肯定レビューが60%以上ならFreshなトマト、59%以下はRotten（腐った）トマトと評価されます。さらにFreshとなった中でも高評価で信頼性の高いものにはCertified Fresh（新鮮保証）となります。
なので、予告にあったFreshは、評論家たちの評価を表していたのですね。また「満足度, 好感度」と言い換えることができるのではないでしょうか。(amphibian)

lattice /lˈæṭɪs/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「格子、格子細工、格子造り」と記載されていました。LDOCEではa pattern or structure made of long pieces of wood, plastic etc that cross each other so that the spaces between them are shaped like diamondsやa regular arrangement of objectsと定義されています。
ドイツ語で「木摺り」という意味のlatteが語源となっています。ちなみに、ガーデニングで使われる、格子状になっている木製の柵はラティスと呼ばれているそうです。(rain)

derelict /dérəlìkt/ を取り上げます。derelict concrete-block wallsとあることから、老朽化した状態を表していると予想しました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1（建物、土地が）放棄（遺棄）された、荒廃した 2（米）義務怠慢の（in）」とありました。
LDOCEには “a derelict building or piece of land is in very bad condition because it has not been used for a long time” と定義されています。長期間手付かずのまま放置されたことが原因で建物や土地が荒れることをさすことがわかりました。
語源を調べてみると、Online Etymology Dictionaryには “from Latin derelictus “solitary, deserted,” past participle of dereliquere “to abandon, forsake, desert,”” と説明されており、見捨てる、諦めるなどの意味を持つ言葉からきているようです。（aqua）

malleable /mˈæliəbl/ が気になります。接頭辞mal-には「悪」の意味合いがあることを知っていたのでマイナスの意味になると予測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』で確認すると「可鍛性の，展性の」「〈人・考えが〉順応性のある」とあります。次にLDOCEでは“technical something that is malleable is easy to press or pull into a new shape” “formal someone who is malleable can be easily influenced or changed by other people”と定義されていました。上記では2番目の意味で使用されています。
語源を『オックスフォード新英英辞典』で調べたところラテン語のmalleus (= a hammer)からきていて、そこから転じて‘able to be hammered’という意味になったことがわかりました。(Kiwi girl)

また、LODCEには、”to move or make something move into a position where one side is higher than the other”と定義されており、類義語として”tip”/típ/も表記されていました。
