A study of the African bush elephant’s vast network of deep wrinkles has found it is intricately designed to help the animals keep their cool, fight off parasites and defend against sun damage, scientists said.

　lattice /lˈæṭɪs/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「格子、格子細工、格子造り」と記載されていました。LDOCEではa pattern or structure made of long pieces of wood, plastic etc that cross each other so that the spaces between them are shaped like diamondsやa regular arrangement of objectsと定義されています。

　ドイツ語で「木摺り」という意味のlatteが語源となっています。ちなみに、ガーデニングで使われる、格子状になっている木製の柵はラティスと呼ばれているそうです。(rain)
