Workers at one poultry farm have had their hands full spraying water on chickens to keep them cool this summer, as scorching heat continues across Japan.

wry /rάɪ/ を取り上げます。文脈から、wry smileで苦笑いといった意味になるかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1（普通は限定）（顔などが）おかしさに不快さ（あざけり）の入り混じった、苦々しい；しかめた 2（ユーモアなどが）皮肉っぽい、ひとひねりした」とありました。例としては “a wry smile” 「苦笑い」 “make a wry face” 「渋い顔をする」などが挙げられています。
LDOCEには “a wry expression or wry humour shows that you know a situation is bad, but you also think it is slightly amusing” と定義されています。
語源はgoo辞書によると、「ねじる (中期英語 wryen，古期英語 wrīgian 向かう，骨折る，傾向がある，急にそれる)の形容詞用法」と説明されていました。（aqua）

夏季集中英語研修が始まりました。また気を引き締めなおして取り組みたいと思います。今回は初回の授業で教えていただいた表現を紹介します。not just a pretty faceです。直訳すると「ただ顔がかわいいだけじゃない」となりますが、当然裏の意味があります。日本語でも「あの子はただかわいいだけじゃない」といったら、他にも何か意味が隠されていることを読み取れると思います。この表現も同様のようです。先生は一言でeducated という意味であるとおっしゃっていました。以下辞書の定義です。
Cambridge Dictionary: “If someone is not just a pretty face, they are not only attractive but also intelligent”
LONGMAN Dictionary of Contemporary English Online: “used humorously to say that someone is intelligent, when people think this is surprising”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「[おどけて]なかなか賢い」
この表現にはprettyという単語が使われていますが、ひとつのidiomなので男性に対しても使うことが可能だと先生はおっしゃっていました。
またnotを抜かしてshe is just a pretty faceにすると、「あの子はただ顔がかわいいだけ」という皮肉たっぷりの文になるそうです。（ko-chi @ Calgary）
bull-market 復習

今回取り上げる表現は、bull-market です。直訳すれば「牛市場」となり、文脈に合いません。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“a time when the prices of most shares are rising” とあり、LDOCE には “a stock market in which the price of shares is going up and people are buying them” と定義されていました。ここから「上げ相場、強気市場」という意味であることがわかります。また LDOCE に bull-market の対表現が bear-market であると記載されていました。これに関しては、過去にブログで取り上げられていたので確認してみてください。この表現の正確な語源まではわかりませんでした。動物を含む表現は他にも沢山あるのでアンテナを張って表現に出会っていきたいです。(OkaUchi)

高校教員対象研修プログラム お礼
一昨日は大変お暑い中、高校教員対象研修プログラムに参加させて頂きありがとうございました。
先生の講演を通して、自分の持つ知識と英語力の浅はかさを実感しました。自分は講演について自分の意見を持つことが出来なかったからです。反対に、他に参加されていた先生方はご自身の意見を積極的に発しておられました。また、ゼミ室にいらっしゃっ先生方のスピーキング力は自分の遥か上をいくものでした。やはり、自分が志す教職は甘いものでは無いと感じました。ですが、自分の指針を今回再確認することができました。地道にまた頑張りたいと思います。
今回は本当にありがとうございました。どうか先生もお体にお気をつけなさってください。（Stonewell）

I took part in a lecture program for high school teachers yesterday. We learned a lot from two lectures.
After the lecture,s we had adinner with our senpai of our seminar. It was really a great time for us. The most impressive thing is a word from Mr. K. He told us “It is important to have a strong passion or enthusiasm on doing everything”. When we heard this, we were able to conform again our attitudes towards learning English and what we want to do in the future.I will learn English harder and get an Eiken 1st in October!

取り上げる単語はwry /raɪ/ です。文脈から、”wry smile” で「苦笑い」を意味しているのではないかと推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(顔などが)しかめた、ゆがめた、苦笑いの、(ユーモア・発言などが)皮肉たっぷりの、(意味などを)曲げられた、こじつけの」とありました。また、LDOCEには “a wry expression or wry humour shows that you know a situation is bad, but you also think it is slightly amusing” と記載があります。goo辞書をみると、由来は古期英語のwrigian(向かう、骨折る、傾向がある、急にそれる)であることが分かります。

as American as apple pie 復習
先日の裏ゼミでは、UG先生に新しい表現を教えていただきました。それがas American as apple pieです。
『オックスフォード現代英英辞典』によると“used to say that sth is typical of America”と定義されています。また『オックスフォード新英英辞典』には多くの例文が載っており、French fries are at least as American as apple pie. やIf violence, as the saying goes, is as American as apple pie, it’s also been as common in American movie theaters as popcorn.などが記載されていました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』で意味を確認すると「きわめてアメリカ的な」「完全にととのった」とあります。補足ですが、Mom’s apple pieで「おふくろの味」を意味します。(Kiwi girl)
mom’s apple pie 復習
昨日のゼミでas American as apple pieという表現をUG先生から教えていただいた時に、辞書にmom’s apple pieという表現を見つけました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第四版,大修館書店)によると「おふくろの味」と意味になるそうです。
以前、「母の味」と英語で言いたかった時には、この表現を見つけることができず、my home cookingと表現しました。しかし昨日こちらのmom’s apple pieを見つけたときにアメリカ的ではありますがこちらの方がニュアンス的にピッタリな感じがしました。
ちなみに一番初めに書いたas American as apple pieは「とてもアメリカ的な」といった意味です。(rain)

今回はlewd /lúːd/ に注目しました。初見の単語なので調べてみました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「みだらな, わいせつ」とあました。また同義語はobsceneが挙げられます。
OEDには “crude and offensive in a sexual way” と定義されています。
語源を調べてみました。詳しいことは不明ですが、もともとの意味はlaity「（聖職者に対して）俗人」という意味合いがあり、そこから転じてworthless, vile, evil といった意味になったと言われています。

bat a thousand
本日も興味を惹かれる表現に出会いました。bat a thousand です。特に文脈のないところからこの表現を知っているか？と尋ねられ、まったく意味を予測することができなかったので、今回調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。
Cambridge Dictionary: “US informal to get something completely right; to do something perfectly”
Merriam-Webster: baseball “having a batting average of 1.000”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「｟米略式｠上々の結果を出す、うまくやる、順調である」
以上のことからbat a thousandは野球用語で「10割打つ」、そしてそこから比喩的に発展して「完璧な結果を残す、大成功を収める」という意味になるということがわかりました。ちなみにbat one thousand と表現することも可能です。(ko-chi @ Calgary)
