(CNN)Malawi's albinos are at risk of "total extinction" amid escalating attacks against them for their body parts, the United Nations warned.
Albinism is a genetic condition that leads to little or no pigment in the eyes, skin and hair. The southern African nation has about 10,000 albinos, according to the U.N.
In some African countries, albinos' body parts are believed to bring wealth and good luck. As a result, attackers chop off their limbs and pluck out organs, and sell them to witchdoctors.
albinos are killed, some attackers go a step further and steal their remains from graveyards, said Ikponwosa Ero, the United Nations' expert on albinism.
"Persons with albinism, and parents of children with albinism, constantly live in fear of attack," she said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military will announce on Friday that has it taken disciplinary action against 16 service members over a deadly Oct. 3 air strike in Afghanistan that destroyed a hospital run by the international medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres, U.S. officials told Reuters.
The disclosure of the nonjudicial punishments will come during the release of the findings of a U.S. military investigation into the incident, which will broadly conclude that the strike was a tragic mistake, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
That finding is consistent with the results of a preliminary investigation released by the U.S. military in November, when commanders stressed that American forces did not intentionally target the hospital.
Instead, General John Campbell, who was then head of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, described a series of blunders that allowed the American forces to target the hospital, even though it was on a no-strike list.
MSF, known as Doctors Without Borders in English, has in the past publicly cast doubt on the idea that the strike could have been a mistake.
Forty-two people were killed in the incident and 37 were wounded as American forces helped Afghans repel Taliban insurgents from the city of Kunduz last year.

また『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）には、「〈物語・音楽などが〉たいへん感傷的な，〈人が〉まぬけで弱弱しい，こぼれやすい・したたる」と載っておりました。
文中では「したたる」として使われていると思います。今回は予想通りの意味になるかと思います。

The Japan Newsから取り上げます。取り上げる表現は，“fit for the role”です。
この記事は，朝ドラ「とと姉ちゃん」の主演女優である高橋充希さんについて書かれています。そのため，「（主人公）役がはまっている」といった意味があると推測できます。果たして，どのような意味があるのか。 “role”には，「役」とった意味があり，“fit”には，「あてはまる，ぴったりの」といった意味があります。つまり，“fit for the role”で，「ぴったりの役」や「役があてはまる」となるのではないでしょうか。また，“for the part”と表すことが出来ることができます。“part”には，“role”と同じ意味を持つことが分かります。(Nao)

代官山駅から少し歩いたところにあり、重要文化財に指定されている「旧朝倉邸」に行ってきました。「旧朝倉邸」は、東京府議会議長や渋谷区議長を歴任した朝倉虎次郎氏によって大正８年に建てられたもので、平成16年に国の重要文化財に指定され、 一般に公開されています。長期休みということもあり、思っていたよりも多くの人が見学に来ており、外国の方々にも出会いました。
どの部屋もつくりにこだわっており、中でも杉の間という部屋は徹底的に「板目」が使われていることがわかりました。そこで「板目」を英語で何というのか気になりました。
杉材の板目であることから"cross grain timber"とありました。板目材は丸太の直径をカットしたものであることから「横に切った」という意味の"cross cut"からcrossが使われているのかと考えました。
当時これだけの「板目」材を揃えるだけでも相当な財力があったことがわかりました。(lua)
Ska
昨日、「日経新聞」の「春秋」欄には、オリンピックロゴに関する話が述べられていました。その中で触れられていた「スカ」という言葉を、今回は取り上げようと思います。
スカとは音楽ジャンルの一つで、ジャマイカが発祥です。R&B（リズムアンドブルース）やJAZZ等のアメリカ音楽がブレンドされ、このジャンルが生まれました。なので、スカはスウィング・ジャズのビッグバンドのような編成で演奏されます。
スカを英語表記にすると、”ska”となります。語源に関しては諸説あるようですが、調べている間に２つの説をよく目にしました。一つ目は、２、４拍目（裏打ち）を強調したリズムの「スチャッ、スチャッ」という音からきているという説。もう一つは、ルードボーイ（不良行為少年を表すジャマイカのスラング）たちの間で流行っていた言葉”skavoovie”からきているという説です。”skavoovie”をUrban Dictionary.comで調べたところ、”Used to greet someone”と説明されていました。
１９６０年代にジャマイカで流行した後は、１９７０年代末にイギリス、１９８０年代にはアメリカへと広がっていきました。少しずつアレンジが加えられており、年代毎に少し特徴があるようです。日本では、現在も活動中の「東京スカパラダイスオーケストラ」（主な略称「スカパラ」）というバンドが有名で、度々CMやテレビ番組などで曲が使用されています。

今回取り上げるのはin tandem with です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究者）でtandemを調べてみますと、名詞で「（二人以上が縦に乗る）タンデム式自転車」とありました。そこからできた表現がin tandem with です。同辞書によりますと「縦列で、（格式）（…と）協力して、同時に（with）」という意味があることがわかりました。二人で自転車をこぐには協力が必要ですから、この意味ができたと考えられます。LDOCEには “in tandem doing something together or at the same time as someone or something else”という意味で載っていました。今回の文脈では、情報技術の向上と同時にという意味になると思われます。

オバマ大統領が，毎年開催される記者クラブの夕食会に出席しました。大統領は，恒例になっているユーモアを交えた演説を行いました。今年のテーマは大統領選挙に関するものです。
記事の中で気になった単語は"zinger" /zíŋɚ/です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』(三省堂)で調べると「当意即妙な返答, 失礼だが気の利いた発言，驚き, ショック」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"A striking or amusing remark"と定義されております。
グーグルで"zinger"を検索すると，KFCの商品である"zinger box"や，三菱自動車が台湾で販売していたSUV自動車の"zinger"などが出てきました。そのほか，世界最軽量をうたう電動車いすの製品名も"zinger"といいます。企業が自社製品に名前を付けるときは，いろいろと思いを巡らしていると思うので，"zinger"は，どちらかというとポジティブなイメージがあるのかと感じました。(Ume)
