先日、ホストファミリーのお子さんと一緒に映画を観に行きました。仕組みが日本と異なっていたので、今回はアメリカの映画館について書きたいと思います。
まず、カウンターでチケットを買いますが座席の指定をしません。チケットの購入のみを行います。チケットは日本の厚紙のしっかりしたものではなく、薄い紙でした。それぞれ作品が上映されているシアターに入る前に、スタッフの人がそれを半分切り離します（tear off a stub）。座席は自由で好きな所に座りました。
映画の上映中、シアター内のライトが薄暗く着いたままだったので、アメリカの映画館はそういうものなのかと思っていましたが、後に映画館の間違いだったことが分かりました。日本ではライトの消し忘れなど滅多にないことなのでとても驚きました。

ヒラリー・クリントン候補の夫であり、第一の支持者であるビル・クリントン元大統領は、ニューハンプシャー州での大統領予備選に向け、共和党サンダース候補を批判する演説を行いました。

"bare"は動詞として用いて「(体の一部を)むき出しにする」の意味があり"bare one's teeth"となると「歯をむき出しにする」となりますが、どのような意味なのでしょうか？『Wisdom英和辞典 』には「(脅すようにして) 歯をむきだす」と定義されていましたが、英英辞書を見てみるとより細かいニュアンスが伝わってきます。Cambridge Dictionary On-line では、"to show that you are angry and prepared to defend yourself"と定義されており、また、Wikitionary では"to show one's aggression "と定義されていることから、必ずしも「歯を出す」という動作ではなく、怒りや敵意を表す表現だとわかります。以下、例文です。

記事では、ビル・クリントン氏が、米国内で"The Big Dog"との愛称で親しまれていたため、ニューハンプシャー州で、対立候補であるサンダース氏を批判した様子を、「犬」にちなんだ表現で表現されているのだと考えられます。(Dew)
a two-way street
日本人のアイドルグループのコンサートでライトペンではなく、不適切なものが会場内で使用されているとして問題になっています。
Many Japanese venues allow concertgoers to wave glow sticks, but waving your junk? That’s a no-no.
Although "idol" singers are expected to be good-looking and emotionally attractive, their most obsessive supporters generally don’t care for it when the pop vocalists present anything other than a very pure image. However, judging from what transpired at a recent "idol" event, some fans apparently don’t think such outward chastity needs to be a two-way street.
"a two-way street"を取り上げます。両面通行の道路のことも指しますが、『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「相互的関係」「お互いの努力でどうにでもなる状況」という意味でここでは使われていることがわかりました。LDOCEでは"used to say that a situation depends on two people working well together"と定義されています。類似表現でbackscratching という表現があることもわかりました。
一方的な相互関係を表す場合は"one way street"となるようです。熱狂するあまりハメを外してしまうこともあるかもしれませんが、ファンとして考えて行動してほしいと思いました。(lua)

「アンセム・オブ・ザ・シーズ号」が帰港しました。４人がけがを負いました。

今回取り上げる表現は，“seaworthy”です。まず，Longman Dictionary of Contemporary Englishには，“a ship that is seaworthy is in a suitable condition to sail”と記載されていました。さらに，『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）には，「（船が）航海可能な」とありました。
“seaworthy”は，“sea”と“worthy”の二つの要素からできています。“worthy”は，連結要素で，形容詞を作る働きと「〜に値する，〜に耐える」といった意味があります。ここでは，後者の意味で用いられています。「海に耐える」が転じて，「航海可能な」といった意味になります。(Nao)

今年1月にアメリカのオバマ大統領が銃規制強化の必要性を涙ながらに訴えましたが、あれから1ヶ月経ってもほとんど進展がありません。

今回取り上げるのは、“lofty”という表現です。この単語をLDOCEで調べてみると、“lofty ideas, beliefs, attitudes etc show high standards or high moral qualities - use this to show approval”という定義が見つかりました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）でも確認してみると、「〈考え・理想などが〉高尚な、高遠な」といった意味が記載されていました。また、調べていく中で「高嶺の花」が“lofty dream”と表されている一例も見つけ（「英辞郎 on the WEB」）、今回の記事の“lofty”には「目指している理想があまりにも高くて、実現には程遠い」というニュアンスが含まれていると考えました。(ninetails)

マンハッタンで5日朝、工事用大型クレーンが倒壊し、1人が死亡、3人が重軽傷を負う事故がありました。NYTには家族や知人の話をもとに、亡くなった男性の愛と知性溢れる人生が綴られています。私の心に残った表現を2つ共有させていただきたいと思います。
When Mr. Wichs’s brother, Daniel, took the microphone, he spoke quietly of an exemplary older brother, a “math genius” who was humble, and when asked how he was would only reply “with a shy and modest smile, ‘good, good.’ ” And yet he charged headlong into life with contagious happiness and enthusiasm, the brother said. “When Rebecca came into his life, she brought him the biggest happiness of all,” he added.
1つ目に上の赤字の部分から、“charge headlong into”の意味を調べていきます。“headlong”の意味から確かめていくと、『ジーニアス英和辞典』には「まっしぐらに[の]；向こう見ずに[な]、軽率に[な]」という意味が載っており、表現例として“rush headlong”「まっしぐらに突進する」とありました。
“charge into”は「<場所>に飛び込む」という意味があるので、with以下のような人生に「まっしぐらに飛び込んだ」となります。with以下は、“contagious”を使うことで日本語には換えがたい英語らしさがあるように感じました。幸福と熱意の渦の中にダイブするようなイメージでしょうか。

2つ目は“put his needs second to others’ ”です。辞書でこの表現を見つけることはできなかったのですが、インターネットで調べていくと “put one’s needs first”という表現も見つけ、これは「〜の必要なことを最優先する」という意味になります。後半部分が“second to others’ ”となると「〜の必要なことは他の人のそれに次いでいる」と解釈できます。つまり、自分のことは後回しにして周りの人たちを一番に考える人のことをこのように表現しています。
この他にも勉強になる表現がいくつも使用されていますので、一読されるといいと思います。今回亡くなられたWichsさんの温かで優しい人柄が溢れるほど伝わってくる感動の文章です。(bookmark)

昨日から雪が降り初め、少しだけ雪が積もっています。今週末にはまた冬の気候が戻ってくるようです。
今日はホストファミリーと行ったスーパーマーケットでのことについて報告します。
以前から、アメリカで売られているものは全てサイズが大きいと聞いていたのですが、あまりにも大きいので予想を上回る結果となりました。日本で考えれば業務用サイズなのではないかと思われる大きさです。
洗剤が大きいことはまだ理解出来たのですが、NIVEAのクリームの大きさには驚愕しました。内容量が500mlでした。ペットボトルと同じサイズにするという発想は思い付きませんでした。
その他にも箱売りの商品が当たり前のように並んでいました。スーパーマーケット以外の他のお店ではどのように売られているのか気になるところです。（Kyoka）

アメリカ大統領選挙の予備選で，ドナルド・トランプ氏・サンダース氏がニューハンプシャー州で当選しました。この結果に米大統領選挙に激震が走ったようです。トランプ氏の投票結果は2位の共和党候補と2倍近い得票差であり，圧勝となっております。
記事の中で気になった単語は"mogul"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「（特にマスコミの）大物, 大立て者」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"informal An important or powerful person, especially in the film or media industry"と定義されております。SPACEALCで書かれている語源によると「＜モンゴル＞を意味するペルシャ語・アラビア語から。もともとは＜ムガル帝国の皇帝＞を指し、転じて「絶大な権力者、大物」の意味になった」と書かれております。今回の記事では"real estate mogul"とあり，不動産王のトランプ氏を指していることが分かります。（Ume）

Mr Trump's lead in New Hampshire is the first time the New York businessman - who has never held elected office - has translated his widespread support in opinion polls into a victory at the polls.
In his victory speech, the real estate mogul congratulated Democratic winner Mr Sanders but sideswiped that "he wants to give away our country, folks!"

運転免許取得にこころを奪われ更新がすっかり滞り、久しぶりの投稿となってしまいました。申し訳ありません。
「アナと雪の女王」が2018年春、ブロードウェーミュージカルになることが発表されました。

Disney announced on Tuesday that it plans to bring a staged musical adaptation of “Frozen,” the smash animated film with the power ballad that became a global earworm, to Broadway in the spring of 2018.
“earworm”を手持ちの辞書で調べてみましたが、見つかりませんでした。そこで、「英辞郎 on the WEB」を見てみると、「頭から抜けない（頭の中で何度も繰り返される・耳にこびりついて離れない）音（曲・メロディー・歌）」という意味がありました。誰もがよく体験する現象の1つとして、イヤーワームとカタカナで用いられることもあるようです。
“worm”は「虫」を意味するので、直訳すると「耳の虫」になり、耳に虫がいて変な感じがする様子から来たのかと考えましたが、いずれにせよ直訳を考えるとイメージしやすいと感じました。
ちなみに語源は「ハサミムシ」を意味するドイツ語の“Ohrwurm”の意訳から来ているようですが、LDOCEでは、“a tune that you keep thinking about in your head, even when you do not want to”と分かりやすく定義されています。映画が話題となった頃は、どこへ行っても”Let it go”が流れていたのを思い出します。(starlight)

場面は筆者がMrs. Etsuko Shinobuの自宅を訪れ，日本の家庭料理を振舞ってもらった後に，茶室に向かうところです。adjournというと「〜を中断する」や「〜を延期する」という意味がまず想起されます（『ウィズダム英和辞典』第3版，三省堂）。実際，私は単語帳で「〜を閉会とする」という意味で覚えていました（『英検文で覚えるプラス単熟語1級』旺文社）。しかし，今回は"to finish an activity and go somewhere"（LDOCE）という意味が適当だと思われます。adjournには物事を終えてからさらに「移動する」という意味も含まれることを押さえておこうと思います。（Koyamamoto）
