stingy

The Denver Broncos upset the Carolina Panthers, 24-10, to win the Super Bowl, led by Peyton Manning and a stingy defense

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — An anticipated showdown between an old-style quarterback and his new-age counterpart — not to mention two top-seeded teams — degenerated into a morass of poor throws, dropped passes and horrible pass protection, with a combined six turnovers and 18 penalties.

(Nao)

catch-all

Georgia proposes 'blasphemy bill' to outlaw religious insult

Georgia is planning a “blasphemy bill” that will make religious irreverence punishable by law, prompting concerns about freedom of expression in the devoutly Orthodox Christian society.

But the bill has caused divisions both within and outside the ruling coalition. Tamar Kordzaia, an MP from the moderate Republican Party, a member of the Georgian Dream coalition, has spoken against it. Its catch-all restriction on remarks about the church would upset the existing balance of civil liberties and comes short of international human rights standards, she said.

Cambridge Dictionary On-line では、"general and intended to include everything"と定義され、例文として"'South London' is a catch-all phrase/term for anywhere south of the river"がありました。

Macmillan Dictionary. comでは"a container for a variety of things that are not related to each other"と定義されていました。

今回の記事では、"Its catch-all restriction..." (Dew)

Indian leopard injures six in Bangalore school

A male leopard which entered a school in the Indian city of Bangalore injured six people trying to capture it.

A scientist and a forestry employee were among those mauled during the near 10-hour long effort to corner the dangerous animal on Sunday.

The leopard, which strolled into the Vibgyor International school, was eventually tranquillised and released.

Conservation scientist Sanjay Gubbi and forest department employee Benny Maurius were injured when they tried to corner the animal and tranquillise him, reports say.

"It was a long struggle to capture the leopard. Although it was injected with tranquillisers it could be captured only around 20.15 local time when the medication took full effect," senior police official S Boralingaiah told reporters.

『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版』(大修館書店)では「〈人などが〉〈人・動物〉を〔場所・窮地に〕追い込む,追い詰める」とあり,LDOCEでは “to force a person or animal into a position from which they cannot easily escape”と定義されていました。(Inaho)

(Akim)

The Denver Broncos upset the Carolina Panthers, 24-10, to win the Super Bowl, led by Peyton Manning and a stingy defense

Led by quarterback Peyton Manning and a stingy defense, the Denver Broncos won the 50th Super Bowl on Sunday with a 24-10 upset victory over the Carolina Panthers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. It was the third Super Bowl victory for the Broncos franchise, and its first since 1999.

It was also the second Super Bowl victory for Denver quarterback Peyton Manning, who had lost two of his previous three Super Bowl appearances, including a lopsided defeat to Seattle only two years ago.

(ninetails)

loss leader

loss leaderは辞書にa product that is sold at a very low price in order to attract customers into a shop(LDOCE)とあるように赤字覚悟の「目玉商品」を指します。 (Koyamamoto)

The chef gave us some other useful tips: if you really want great service from a Japanese sushi chef it requires just one word: Omakase, which means ‘I’ll let you decide’. And if you want to really piss a sushi chef off, just keep ordering tuna, which many restaurants sell as a loss leader. If they bring you miso soup to start, the place is probably run by Koreans or Chinese. (SUSHI AND BEYOUND, p.101)

banal#2

Oxford Dictionaries.comには"So lacking in originality as to be obvious and boring"と定義されております。語源をOxford Dictionaries.comで確認すると"Mid 18th century (originally relating to feudal service in the sense 'compulsory', hence 'common to all')"と書かれておりました。 (Ume)

Japan and the whale

"There are some important political reasons why it is difficult to stop now." he said. He would say no more.
But Junko Sakuma thinks the answer lies in the fact that Japan's whaling is government-run, a large bureaucracy with research budgets, annual plans, promotions and pensions.
"If the number of staff in a bureaucrat's office decreases while they are in charge, they feel tremendous shame," she says.
"Which means most of the bureaucrats will fight to keep the whaling section in their ministry at all costs. And that is true with the politicians as well. If the issue is closely related to their constituency, they will promise to bring back commercial whaling. It is a way of keeping their seats."
It may seem incredibly banal. But Japan's determination to continue whaling may come down to a handful of MPs from whaling constituencies and a few hundred bureaucrats who don't want to see their budgets cut.
