Nishikori wins Brisbane International title
Kei Nishikori won his first ATP title since Memphis in 2016 with a dominating final set to beat Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the Brisbane International final on Sunday.
The 2014 U.S. Open finalist served for the match at 5-1 in the third set, but Medvedev earned a temporary reprieve when he broke the Japanese player’s serve to extend the match.
But Nishikori, who had lost nine consecutive ATP finals over 52 tournaments in nearly three years, broke the Russian player’s serve on four consecutive points in the final game to clinch the match in just 2 hours, 6 minutes, at Pat Rafter Arena.

reprieve /rɪpríːv/ を取り上げます。試合が伸びるような粘り強い戦いを表現していると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で引くと「（死刑）執行延期（令状）；（一時的）猶予（from）」とありました。動詞として使われる場合には「1（死刑人）の刑の執行を猶予する 2（…）を（危険、困難から）一時的に救う、一時免れさせる（from）」という意味を表し、危険や困難な状況は過ぎ去っておらず、一時的に落ち着いている状態を表します。
LDOCEには “a delay before something bad happens or continues to happen” や “an official order stopping the killing of a prisoner as a punishment” と定義されています。いずれは悪い出来事が起こる、もしくは再び始まることが伺えます。
試合の内容を確認してみると、第3セットの第7ゲームでメドベージェフ選手がラブゲームでブレイクし、第8ゲームが行われたことから、a temporary reprieveと表現されていることがわかりました。（aqua）
