feral /ˈferəl/ が気になりました。意味は文脈から、「野生の」であると推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(動植物が)野生の、(人の手を離れて)(ペット・家畜が)野生に戻った、(人が)野蛮な」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “feral animals used to live with humans but have become wild” “feral children or young people behave badly in public and commit crimes, because they are not controlled by anyone and have no respect for authority” と定義されています。Oxford English DictionariesをみるとEarly 17th century: from Latin fera ‘wild animal’ (from ferus ‘wild’) + -al.と、語の由来がありました。
アライグマは40年ほど前にテレビで流行した影響もあり、人気のペットとして大量に輸入されました。しかしその後、人間に捨てられたりと粗暴な扱いを受け、野生化への道を辿りました。私たちの食べ物に被害を与えてはいますが、その原因は人間自身にあるような気がします。(seventh-dan)
