An alien critter with a cute image but a potentially ferocious demeanor befuddled police and firefighters for hours in a ritzy section of central Tokyo.
The creature was a raccoon, a mammal native to North America that has spread across Japan mainly through irresponsible pet owners and shops.
Around 8:20 p.m. on Oct. 17, police received a report about a raccoon in the Akasaka 5-chome district of Tokyo’s Minato Ward.
An officer from the Akasaka Police Station found a raccoon measuring 50 to 60 centimeters long in a tree.

befuddled /bɪfʌ́dəld/ を取り上げます。文脈から、捕獲しようとする警察や消防が手間取らされている様子を表していると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「当惑した、混乱した」とありました。
LDOCEには “completely confused” と定義されており、例文には “Even in my befuddled state, I could find my key.” と説明されているように、本当に困っている状態であることがわかります。fuddle /fˈʌdl/ だけでは “if something, especially alcohol or drugs, fuddles you or your mind, it makes you unable to think clearly” とあり、お酒や薬物のせいで頭がはっきりしない様子を表すようです。
環境省指定の特定外来生物であることから、今後どのように対応していくのかが問われています。今回保護されたアライグマに関しては、その日のうちに業者へ引き渡されたそうです。（aqua）
