Japan reportedly to halt Iran oil imports under U.S. pressure

TOKYOーJapan's major oil wholesalers are preparing to suspend crude oil imports from Iran in October, amid fears Washington will sanction countries importing Iranian crude, local media reported Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump in May pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and last month began reimposing sanctions that block other countries from trading with Iran.

A second phase of sanctions targeting Iran's crucial oil industry and banking sector will be reinstated on Nov 5.

　気になったのはreinstate //です。制裁を再開するという話であるのと、re-という接頭辞が付いていることから、制裁を復活することを表している表現なのではないかと考えました。

　『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「≪…に/…として≫…を復位[復職、復権]させる≪in/as≫」と「〈法・制度など〉を復活させる」という二つの語義が載っています。制裁が主語に来ていることからも、後者の意味で使われていることが明らかだと思います。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“to make something such as a law, system, or rule exist again”と定義されていました。

　ちなみに、instateは「〜につかせる、任命する」という意味なので、これに接頭辞のre-が付いたのが今回の表現です。(Blue Sky)
